Distinctive Undergraduate Program Characteristics
A number of unique characteristics of the FAU BSEE degree program are:
- Personalized teaching and dedicated advising - a 1:16 faculty-to-student ratio permits the
professors to get to know students as individuals.
- A number of faculty members conduct world-class research and involve undergraduate
students along with graduate students in their research teams.
- A project-based approach to learning is taken, where the focus is on the creative application
of knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems.
- Students sharpen their skills in creative problem solving, collaboration,
communications and leadership through a number of design competitions sponsored by the IEEE and ASEE. Students recently placed first and second in several regional and national Robotics and Website competitions and won the Motorola Quality Award.
In a major study conducted in 2004-05 by an independent organization to provide program
assessment tools in support of continuous improvement efforts, the FAU BSEE program was
compared, based on student input, with a number of EE programs at other Universities across
the United States. The FAU BSEE program ranked first or second in the following categories:
- Quality of instruction and interaction in major course work.
- Value derived from team and extracurricular activities.
- Use of modern engineering tools and enhancement of communication skills.
- Degree to which the program improved ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
- Quality of the final year capstone design experience.
- Laboratory facilities.
- Overall program experience.
The BSEE degree program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the
Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
